The Vehicle: Picturing Moments of Transition in a Modernizing Society

Edited by Akram Zaatari

The Vehicle looks at the social transformations in the Middle East through the space given to the vehicle, and to the means of transport in general, in the albums of families in Lebanon, Syria, Egypt and Palestine in the forties and fifties. The photographs present us with keys to the understanding of values of modernity across social backgrounds. The book presents photographs of people standing / traveling on various vehicles such as trains, planes, camels, automobiles, horses, battle-ships and bicycles. The significance that vehicles acquired during the first half of this century reflected people’s desire to picture themselves during moments of transition.
