Founded by journalist and critic Pierre Abi Saab, Zawaya is an Arabic cultural publication targeting the Arab youth. Its eighteen issues (including issue zero) were released at irregular intervals during its active years from 2001 to 2007. Topics addressed regional practices in the arts such as theater, film, music, literature... Art directed in collaboration with Zeina Maasri, the publication’s design played a major role in the making of its content, where our input was as much an editorial feat as it was a design one. In its flexible layout, the grid and visual material – both image and text – were inventively manipulated as an integral component of each article, blurring the classical separation between design and content.
